Victoria Healy, a sophomore at Washington and Jefferson College, has received the third annual $2,500 scholarship of the German American Business Circle in cooperation with the German American Chamber of Commerce and the Pittsburgh Rotary Club Foundation. The scholarship benefits collegiate-level students from Western Pennsylvania who demonstrate academic excellence and strong interest in German-American business affairs and culture, and who plan to further their studies through study abroad at an accredited institution of higher learning in Germany.

Healy is spending the 2016-2017 school year at Germany’s Ludwig Maximilian University as a participant in the Year of Study in Munich Program sponsored by Lewis & Clark University. She is the daughter of Jeffrey and Karen Healy of Pittsburgh and expects to receive her bachelor’s degree from W&J in 2018.

“Through my studies in Germany, I aspire to achieve fluency in the language, as well as a full understanding of the country, culture, traditions and people of Germany,” said Healy. “Studying abroad in Germany is really a dream for me, and to be given the opportunity to be in Germany for 13 months is an incredible chance for me to really live like a local in one of the largest cities in the country.”

Healy’s faculty advisor is Michael Shaughnessy, Ph.D., Associate Dean of Graduate Studies & International Programs who serves as Senior International Officer and professor of German in the Department of Modern Languages.

As a W&J student, Healy is majoring in German and international business and is a member of the German Club and International Club. While in high school, she served as junior and senior class president, was a member of the German Club and National Honor Society and captain of the volleyball, basketball and track teams. She also was a marching band section leader.

Previous years’ winners include Angela Marie Nied (2015) and Aric N. Brown (2014), both students at W&J.

The Scholarship Selection Committee includes a representative from each of the GABC’s three founding firms – Ardex Americas, BKD, LLP and Cohen & Grigsby – as well as the sitting chair of the PRCF and the sitting president of the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh.

The German American Chamber of Commerce, Pittsburgh was founded in 2015 to promote and support bilateral trade between Germany and the U.S. A private, non-profit organization, it serves as the official representative of German trade in Western Pennsylvania and is part of an international network composed of 130 German foreign chambers of commerce and government offices in 90 countries.
